I want my students to be engaged in their learning and have fun doing so. I was given access to the learn shell for my apprenticeship course and a stack of binders of someone else’s work to accompany this. A pretty daunting task to sort through everything so I decided to use the learn shell for my source and refer to the binders if I had to as a secondary because the binder information would make more sense to the person who wrote the material than it would to me.
In using the learn shell I assumed that all the culinary arts programs would be set up the same way and that all the information students required to be successful were going to be there. I also assumed that the information and test banks were indeed accurate. This was not the case, there were several inaccuracies which I was able to catch prior to my class starting and some I would change as we went along, mostly summative assessment details in the quiz banks.
The students would be introduced to learn on their first day and the important places to go on the site. This was confusing to the students, and they ended up not really using the site for guidance, only for taking the tests. The level of engagement was low as far as learn was concerned, and I could simply tell the students what they needed to read to stay ahead and this would be as effective. I too did not know the learn site very well at the time so making it a useful resource was a challenge. The students weren’t learning from learn.
I wanted to make learn a tool that would guide the students through the program for self-study and ultimately to success. I signed up for a “sandbox” course and took some tutorials to learn more about learn and the benefits it has. I needed to have an interactive system which would pique the interest and curiosity with self-guided studies in addition to my teaching to show that learn was relevant and necessary for them to complete the training.
The learn site has been evolving with me as I worked my way through CAE. I utilize Bloom’s Taxonomy, and I have added secondary learning objectives to help guide the students. I am unable to change the course of culinary apprenticeship as the curriculum in determined by the government, but I have been able to enhance the way the students receive the information. All the modules have been vetted and updated with necessary and relevant information. There have been videos added for the auditory learners and checklists for the note takers in the class. I feel the students are interested more engaged when they log on which shows through increased time on the site when I check their content progress.
